3 Tips for Healthy Eating/Fitness for Kids

Here comes summer!  Yea!  Are you ready?  Wise food choices and exercise are key to keeping everyone healthy so they can have a ton of fun.  All parents want good things for their children.  That is a given, right?  Sometimes our best intentions, as a recent report says, state that for the first time in 2 centuries, this generation of children may have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.  You might have heard that before, but it’s pretty scary isn’t it?

TV, video games and junk food are main culprits.  Do you think your children are getting enough exercise and eating healthy?  Kids like junk food and if it is available, they will eat it.  Who would blame them?  Well, healthy food also tastes great.  Here are 3 ideas for starters:

  1. Add color – Kids love color, so how about adding bright and colorful fruits and veggies to your child’s plate?  Fresh fruits and veggies are filled with fiber, vitamins and minerals that are essential to good health.  This will get them on the fast track to good health.
  2. Ban the Sugary Drinks – One of the best things (maybe not the easiest) is to have your children learn to love water.  Pop and most juices are filled with empty calories that help with weight gain.  Once children get used to having water, they will love it and not even miss the sugary drinks, really!
  3. Think “real” foods – foods that come from the ground like fruits and veggies.  Anything that grows in the ground is a good bet to be a healthy choice.  So, in that context, you will want to avoid processed foods.  More and more studies are stating processed foods are very unhealthy.

Treat yourself and your children right and get some exercise every day and start with the healthy 3 tips above.  You’ll be glad that you did!
